4 Tips from Food Allergy Kids: A Series

COVID-19 hit the world in a frenzy. Suddenly people are buying food, toilet paper, masks, soap and hand sanitizer by the bucketload. We’ve been self-isolating for so long, it is hard to remember how close we all used to live. Even when watching an old movie or reruns on TV, we catch ourselves thinking, “how are the actors allowed to be that close?" We could recite this phrase in our sleep:

To prevent the further spread of COVID-19, maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from others.

It is an understatement to say that the world was unprepared for what changes would come from the coronavirus pandemic. However, some aspects of this new lifestyle are not completely foreign for all of us. People with food allergies have always lived a semi-socially distanced life.

Washing hands often? Check.

Wearing a mask for traveling? Check.

Not being able to eat at restaurants? Check.

Bringing your own food to social gatherings? Check.

Not finding what you need at the grocery store? Check.

As the COVID-19 pandemic still rages in the United States, perhaps we can learn some tips from allergy kids about how to stay safe. (We are using the word 'kid,' but are including people of all ages, signifying someone who grew up with an allergy.) After all, these 'kids' refrain from ingesting dangerous, yet common, substances every day; they are pros at this.
