Nutrition Education is Vital
At Food Equality Initiative, food is medicine. A big part of treating food as medicine is expanding nutrition education.
We believe that food is medicine to treat medical conditions such as food allergies, celiac disease, Crohn’s Disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, hypertension, and more. But, we also believe food is medicine to prevent illness and improve overall health through the regular consumption of nutritious food, otherwise known as nutrition security.
To recognize the potential of Food is Medicine, Food Equality Initiative (FEI) serves in three different ways: Access, Education, and Advocacy. We already broke down our first pillar: Access. So let’s dive into our second pillar: Education.
FEI supports diverse social networks to help our families navigate the free-from culinary world with confidence.
In our Free-From Magazine, we offer educational materials such as research news, personal testimonies, nutrition education, and lifestyle techniques to help foster a positive diet-restricted community. Our past issues’ themes have included: Self-Care, Play with your Food, The All-American Food Allergy Experience, and Going Meatless.
You can access all issues completely free of charge, in both English and Spanish.
Additionally, we keep a well-stocked Blogazine with shorter articles about all sorts of health-related themes. We strive to create community and provide tips for living a full life with dietary restrictions. You can check out articles like: Balancing Blood Sugar, Plant-Based Iron, Importance of Protein, and Nutrient Deficiency.
Free-From Podcast is dedicated to helping individuals with restricted diets realize the fullest potential in their food. Whether you have a food allergy, celiac disease, diabetes, IBS, EoE, the list goes on, we are all here and we are all connected through food. Our bodies need ‘the good stuff,’ but healthy has a different definition for every body. The Free-From Podcast explores how Food is Medicine for different bodies and how we can all benefit from knowing more about our food. New episodes are released every other Sunday at 5pm Central.
Finally, our Recipes are hand-crafted to encourage readers to develop lifelong practices for healthy eating and general nutrition education. With common accommodations such as gluten-free and top 9 allergen-free, we hope that there is something for everyone at the table. Check out our recipes for dishes such as: Soy-Free Teriyaki Sushi Bowl, Lemon Chicken Pasta, Nut-Free & Dairy-Free Horchata, and Asian Lettuce Cups.
